East African Bio-Renaissance: Waste Alchemy for Climate-Resilient Prosperity

East Africa confronts a sovereign waste crisis where 180 million tonnes of annual agricultural biomass languishes unvalorized, forfeiting $12 billion in biomaterials, 45 MtCO₂e sequestration, and 500,000 green jobs despite abundant feedstocks converging with EiTEX biorefinery infrastructure. This PRISMA 2020-guided systematic review synthesizes 28 empirical studies (2015–2025) mapping integrated waste biorefineries as transformative pathways from linear crisis to climate-resilient prosperity, addressing Ethiopia's 7.2 million tonnes agricultural discards and Bahir Dar's 45,000 tonnes textile waste against an $8.3 billion financing gap. Quantitative synthesis across Web of Science, Scopus, and EiTEX repositories reveals agricultural residues (57% prevalence) delivering 92% silica recovery from rice husks, 280 L/ton bioethanol from coffee husks, and 2.5× ROI from maize biochar, complemented by 65% cellulose and 45% nanocellulose from textiles plus 52% PHA bioplastics from municipal organics. Multi-stream plants achieve $2.1 million NPV with 3.2× returns under climate variability, realizing systemic 2.8× ROI across value chains sequestering 45 MtCO₂e annually. Findings validate EiTEX-Bahir Dar as immediate scalability hub, bridging sovereign circularity gaps while delivering Agenda 2063-aligned policy architectures mandating 70% recovery by 2030 through $8.5 billion climate finance and EAC-wide "Bio-Renaissance Act," with longitudinal panel studies and AI-optimized cascades essential for full waste alchemy realization.
