Mapping Cotton value chain of Ethiopia

Abstract
In this study paper the potential cotton crop production land of Ethiopia has been assessed, from more than 3 million hectare of land suitable for cotton production only 3.6% of it is utilized. But currently as it known textile factories are increasing in number and productivity although they are not supplied with enough amount of cotton fibre. This drives the factories to import cotton from different countries mainly USA, India, Sudan, etc. For solving this problem cotton value chain mapping is needed. So in this study, mapping of cotton value chain is developed and from the mapping, with the use of the different chain actors, 4 different marketing channels have been formulated. These channels help in increasing yield/productivity, maximizing profit through reduction of transportation, raw material and carrying costs. In addition, to increase the yield, proper utilization of the potential production land, production of quality cotton satisfying ‘Cotlook cotton market quality index’ and for producing premium quality cotton satisfying the demand of textile factories, the study investigates the different opportunities and constraints faced both in production and marketing segments. After detail assessment possible solutions have been proposed and model is also formulated for improving the performance of value chains through combinations of four strategies. In this study, with incorporation of gaps identified, activities to be conducted and achieved results/deliverables, which are bounded in time frame, an action plan have been prepared & proposed to be done in the coming few years.
