Abstract

The aim of this project was to survey the flora and fauna of the main campus of Bahir Dar Vniversity. It was necessary because the university campus is relatively well rehabilitated and it is very important that the composition of the vegetation, the regeneration capacity of the vegetation and the importance of the tree species to supporting animals are studied. The fact that the area is serving as a safe haven to the surrounding animals, both diurnal and nocturnal ones are known to live in this rehabilitated area. A general plant and animal cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2005/2006. The study on vegetation was limited to shrubs and trees. Sixty-four tree and shrub species belonging to 34 families were identified. The surveyed fauna were mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. More thanĀ 80 species of birds were recorded in this relatively protected ecosystem.
